SendGrid alternative: Irisend vs SendGrid

SendGrid (now folded into Twilio.com) prices by plan tier rather than a simple per-1,000 overage, and its Mail Send API supports a notably larger single-request batch than Irisend's. The two APIs otherwise solve the same problem from different request shapes.

Facts below are sourced from Twilio's SendGrid pricing page and Mail Send API reference, fetched 3 November 2026. Irisend is in early access: every team sends free today (capped at 10,000 emails/month); any Irisend price mentioned below is its listed launch pricing, not yet billed.

What Irisend does that SendGrid doesn't

  • A documented idempotency key

SendGrid's v3 Mail Send request schema — personalizations, from, content, attachments, template_id, tracking_settings, mail_settings — has no idempotency header or field anywhere in the reference reviewed. Irisend's Idempotency-Key is a first-class, documented 24-hour contract.

  • One flat overage rate instead of a tiered plan ladder

Every Irisend paid plan and pay-as-you-go lists the same €0.70/1,000 overage rate (not yet billed — early access is free); SendGrid's per-tier dollar pricing for a specific volume wasn't published on the page checked, which is itself a transparency difference worth noting.

  • EU region without a plan gate

Irisend's eu-west-1 region is available on every plan, including Free. SendGrid's EU regional sending requires Pro plan or above plus a dedicated EU subuser.

Where SendGrid is honestly stronger

  • A much larger single-request batch

SendGrid's personalizations array supports up to 1,000 recipients per Mail Send request. Irisend's batch endpoint caps at 100 emails per request (batchEmailSchema) — a real ceiling difference for very large single-call sends.

  • Twilio's wider communications platform

SendGrid sits inside Twilio's broader SMS/Verify/communications ecosystem, which is a meaningfully larger platform than a standalone email API for teams already on Twilio.

  • Dedicated IPs from a lower volume tier

SendGrid includes a dedicated IP from the Pro plan; Irisend doesn't offer dedicated IPs at all today.

  • Production pricing, live today

SendGrid's prices above are what customers actually pay right now. Irisend is still in early access (free for everyone, capped at 10,000 emails/month) — its listed launch prices aren't billed yet.

Verdict

If a single request needs to fan out to hundreds of recipients at once, SendGrid's 1,000-per-request batch is a real capability Irisend doesn't match yet. For idempotent retries, a flat overage rate, and EU sending without an upgrade, Irisend is the more transparent default.
